Dean Ackerlund modelled briefly in the late 1960s and early 1970s and her photos appeared in most of the men’s magazines of the era. She lived and worked in San Francisco, California, and was one of the first of the “BBWs” — Big, beautiful women — to model.

Ms Ackerlund was active in community and Democratic Party politics in San Francisco for ten years or more after her modelling career and, unlike most women who modelled, never aspired to become an actress.
